Paraguay Unveils a New Family of Guaraní Banknotes
The Banco Central del Paraguay (BCP) has officially unveiled a completely redesigned family of Paraguayan Guaraní banknotes on 5 October 2026, marking one of the most significant changes to Paraguay's circulating banknotes in more than six decades.
The new series preserves the existing six denominations while introducing new designs, updated security features, differentiated dimensions and a strong emphasis on Paraguayan history, culture and biodiversity.
A Banknote Family Reflecting Paraguay
One of the most interesting aspects of the new series is the way each denomination represents an important part of Paraguayan history and national identity.
2,000 Guaraníes – Indigenous Peoples
The 2,000 Guaraníes note pays tribute to the Indigenous Peoples of Paraguay, highlighting their cultural heritage and contribution to the country's identity.

5,000 Guaraníes – The Missions
The 5,000 Guaraníes note represents the legacy of the Paraguayan missions. It features Roque González de Santa Cruz and Fray Juan de San Fernando, remembered as an important figure in Paraguay's religious and cultural history.

10,000 Guaraníes – Fathers of the Nation
The 10,000 Guaraníes note features José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia and Carlos Antonio López, two major figures in the formation and early development of Paraguay as an independent nation.
An important change for collectors is that the new 10,000 Guaraníes note will be printed on polymer, expanding the polymer portion of the Paraguayan banknote family.

20,000 Guaraníes – National Heroes
The 20,000 Guaraníes note honours Paraguayan national heroes Francisco Solano López and José Félix Estigarribia.

50,000 Guaraníes – Education and Paraguayan Women
The 50,000 Guaraníes note celebrates education and the important role of women in Paraguayan history through the portraits of educators Celsa and Adela Speratti.

100,000 Guaraníes – Paraguayan Art
The highest denomination, 100,000 Guaraníes, pays tribute to Paraguayan music and art through two celebrated musicians: Agustín Pío Barrios and José Asunción Flores.

Paraguay's Biodiversity on the Reverse
The new banknotes also place considerable emphasis on Paraguay's extraordinary biodiversity.
The BCP's biodiversity project selected representative flora and fauna from Paraguay's different ecoregions for incorporation into the new banknote family. The selected species include the bellbird, giant otter, jaguar, tagua, rainbow bull, yacaré, butterfly, lapacho and other native species.
This gives the new series an interesting dual character: Paraguayan history and people on the front, and the country's natural heritage on the reverse.
New Dimensions for Better Accessibility
Another major change is the introduction of different lengths for the denominations while maintaining the same width.
The notes will decrease progressively in length according to denomination, with approximately 7 mm between successive denominations. This design is intended to make it easier for people with visual disabilities to distinguish between different values.
This is particularly interesting from a collecting perspective because the new Paraguayan series will have clearly differentiated physical dimensions instead of the uniform dimensions used by the current family.
Polymer and Cotton Substrates
The new family continues Paraguay's use of both polymer and traditional cotton-based substrates.
The 2,000, 5,000 and new 10,000 Guaraníes notes will be produced on polymer, while the 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 Guaraníes will use cotton-based paper.
For polymer-banknote collectors, the addition of the 10,000 Guaraníes denomination makes this particularly interesting, creating a three-denomination polymer group within the new Paraguayan family.
A Major Redesign After More Than 60 Years
The redesign represents a major departure from the visual appearance of Paraguay's previous banknote family. The BCP's new project aims to modernize the notes, improve security against counterfeiting and address the changing requirements of modern currency production.
The Paraguayan Guaraní itself was introduced as the country's monetary unit on 5 October 1943, making the unveiling of the new banknote family on its 83rd anniversary especially significant.
A Significant New Issue for Banknote Collectors
For world-banknote collectors, the 2026 Paraguayan Guaraní family is an especially interesting release.
It combines:
Six denominations + three polymer notes + three cotton notes + new dimensions + historical personalities + Indigenous heritage + Paraguayan biodiversity + updated security features
The combination of polymer and cotton substrates also makes the series particularly attractive to collectors who specialize in polymer banknotes and modern banknote design.
The new family represents not just a redesign of Paraguay's currency, but a visual presentation of the country's history, people, culture and natural heritage.
