Cuba New high-denomination banknotes

The Central Bank of Cuba informs the public that, as a result of the update of the country's monetary system, two new denominations are being introduced: 2,000 and 5,000 Cuban pesos.
The Central Bank of Cuba informs the public that, as a result of the update of the country's monetary system, two new denominations (2,000 and 5,000 Cuban pesos) are being introduced, and the structure that this system should have under the current circumstances is still being studied.

Starting Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the first 5,000 Cuban peso bills will begin circulating in Havana and will gradually be introduced throughout the country; the same will happen with the 2,000 Cuban peso bill, which will be announced in due course.

The issuance of the new banknotes aims to facilitate cash transactions, respond to the real needs of the economy that demands high amounts of cash, help reduce cash logistics costs and increase operational agility during the current period of inflation the country is experiencing.

The new family of Cuban banknotes features a redesigned banknote , utilizing the full surface area and incorporating new security elements. For the first time in the history of Cuban numismatics, these two new banknotes will feature images of Cuban patriots. The 2,000 CUP note depicts Mariana Grajales Cuello, Mother of the Nation , and the 5,000 CUP note features Celia Sánchez Manduley, Heroine of the Sierra Maestra.

Both banknotes show the following characteristics:

- The paper used in the production is a special security paper for banknotes, with characteristics in accordance with international standards, respecting its dimension of 150 by 70 millimeters.

- The predominant colors on the 2,000 peso bill are violet and pink; for the 5,000 peso bill, it is blue.

- A watermark with the image of the patriot is included, accompanied by an electrotype with the denomination of the banknote.

- Integrated vertically into the paper on the right side of the banknote, there will be a security thread with a movement effect where the initials BCC and the denomination number will be observed; on the front, the acronym BCC and the denomination number.

- On both the front and back, the national flower of Cuba, "The Butterfly," will appear as a novel security element, which will have a rainbow movement effect when the angle of observation varies.

- The image of the patriot will be located in the center of the obverse. It will be printed in high relief.

- The legend "Banco Central de Cuba" will be located in the upper left corner. The Bank's logo and name will appear in the lower right corner; above this will be a high-relief element made using colorless printing, which can be seen and felt.

- In the upper right corner, below the denomination, there will be banknote identification elements for visually impaired people.

- In the upper center of the two banknotes will appear the initials BCC, belonging to the Central Bank of Cuba and below it the signature of the president of the Bank.

- On the reverse side, the phrase REPUBLIC OF CUBA is displayed in the center. In the center is an image of a memorial complex. In the case of the 2,000 CUP note, it refers to the monument to the Mother of the Nation in the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, and in the case of the 5,000 CUP note, to the Celia Sánchez Manduley Memorial in Lenin Park.

- For both, the name will be placed in letters at the bottom center.

- In the upper left, below the denomination and in the lower right, above the denomination, the banknote series will appear, consisting of three letters and a two-digit number.

- In turn, in the upper left and right areas of the banknote, the banknote number appears with 6 digits.

• The logo of the Central Bank of Cuba and the year the banknote was manufactured will appear in the lower left corner.
